If you are looking for a magical place, known by many as the 'Maremma Maldives', Lake Accesa is a destination not to be missed. Its crystal-clear waters surrounded by unspoilt nature make it a true jewel of the Maremma.
But besides its beauty, this lake hides a fascinating legend. It is said that Lago dell'Accesa did not exist before 26 July 1218, when a wheat-growing plain stood in its place. On that very day, some farmers, ignoring the feast day of St Anne, decided to start harvesting. Around noon, the sky darkened, the earth shook and a chasm opened up, swallowing everything: men, animals and fields.
After a storm of fire and deluge, a lake of dark green water was found instead of fields. The name 'Accesa' is said to derive from the flames that rose that day.
